hmv promos

i had lunch today with cousin e. after the meal, we went to hmv. i got some cd's that were on special.

i got some newer releases that were part of the 2/$25 promotion:

armin van buuren - imagine
a reminder of when i first started listening to music; it was dance mixes.

ladytron - velocifero
the first track i heard from this album is "black cat", with a slight industrial feel to it; i like. after listening to the whole album, another track i enjoy is "the lovers".

i also got some older releases, part of the 2/$20 promotion:

gorillaz - demon days
no comment. actually, this was rather disappointing; i only got this to pair with the nada surf cd.

nada surf - let go
at first listen, their music is nothing special. but i find myself liking their songs more and more with every listen. their songs are perfect pop sweetness, and the vocalist's voice sounds so kind. my favourite track is "inside of love". it's such a beautiful love song.

thursday + nada surf

i checked out this tiny used book/cd/dvd shop on my way home from school. their cd selection is not large, but i found a couple of albums.

thursday - a city by the light divided
yesterday, i randomly dug out thursday's earlier album "full collapse" to listen, and it reminded me of how much i used to love this kind of music. it was like discovering a band all over again. coincidently, when browsing through the shelf today, i saw their more recent "a city by the light divided", and so i got it. listening to it now, it's good, but not as good as "full collapse". the newer album doesn't have any of the hardcore influences i love so much. there are more melodic songs, and one even has a slightly post-rock opening...

nada surf - high/low
this is the album that contains the song "popular", their big hit from the 90's. i loved that song back then, i still love it now. i'm kind of disappointed with the rest of that album. it sounds dated, typical rock from that post-grunge period; uninteresting. i much prefer their more recent material.

~~~
edit: there is a track on the thursday album that i didn't pay much attention to, until i heard a different mix of it. the difference is subtle, but i actually like it more. i'm slightly disappointed that they did not include this mix of the song instead, on the album... eargasm begins at around 2:13.
thursday - telegraph avenue kiss (rich costey mix)
mates of state, nada surf
i visited hmv again, this time with a girl i met in class. a couple of items were knocked off my wishlist.
mates of state - bring it back
i first heard about this band after hearing a song of theirs on a punk compilation (wtf?). i had missed their show last week, so i got their most recent album instead. their keyboard-and-drums music is light and fun. a lot of sing-alongs, duets, overlapping vocals... their husband-and-wife act is oh-so-cute.
nada surf - the weight is a gift
most people have heard their song "popular" and not much else. but they are so much more than a one-hit wonder. this album is pure pop sweetness.
