two ep's

today being tuesday, i stopped by hmv to check out the new releases of the week. nothing of interest. instead, i got two older ep's. short and sweet. and somewhat noisy.

the blood brothers - love rhymes with hideous car wreck [ep]
the title track is one of my favourites from their "crimes" album. this ep also contains their remix of gang of four's "anthrax". upon my first listen, i found out that this also contains "metronomes", a song that i had heard before and liked, without knowing what song it was. i am still upset at myself for missing all those times they played in montreal; the band is broken up now, and i have never seen them live.

the horrors - the horrors [ep]
i first heard about them when their song "sheena is a parasite" was played in a podcast. then, i saw the video and it scared me a little. still, i like the song.

i find myself less hesitant to buy ep's now. i've found that for certain bands, the ep's contain better songs than their studio albums. especially those hyped-up bands who release an amazing ep, only to follow with a disappointing debut album.

blood brothers

i also ordered an old blood brothers release "rumors laid waste". it appears to be a compilation of old releases, early split singles, and the like.

i've only listened to it once. i must admit that i am disappointed. it kind of sounds like typical screamo, wannabe-hardcore, punk shit. eh, i guess i am being harsh, and should listen to this a few more times before i make up my mind. at least, it shows how much their sound has changed, and for the better. perhaps i should listen to this cd, in chronological order with their other releases, and it will make more sense?

they are playing montreal at the end of march. i would very much like to go see them live. but for some reason, i am a little afraid to go to that show alone...

blood brothers

i only found out last week that the blood brothers have new material. after seeing their most recent video, i listened to a stream of the new album. and now, i am obsessed with this band. they are my favourite band of the week.

their new album "young machetes" was out today, and so i had to get it. it is so good. i love how intense and energetic the music is. i love the dual vocal assault/shrieks.

during the train ride home, i was reading the lyrics booklet. wtf...? it's kind of messed up. the lyrics aren't particularly scary or anything, but the topics are kind of uncomfortable. i love it.

this disc will be in my cd player for the rest of the week.

it makes me so sad that i will miss their live show because i have a evening class that day. i love this band so much, i've considered skipping class to see them live. (but i won't.)

the cd's i ordered a while ago arrived in the mail on friday. i've been listening to them all weekend.

blood brothers - burn piano island burn
the first time i heard about this band was when i saw their video for "ambulance vs. ambulance", and it immediately caught my attention. despite the slightly annoying dual skrieking vocals, the music intrigued me. i love how they yell through most of their songs, but include a few lines of actual singing. on "ambulance vs. ambulance", the singing is accompanied by a few notes on the glockenspiel, and those six seconds make up my favourite moment of the entire album.

calla - calla
i had only heard their two most recent albums, and i love them. and so, i got their self-titled debut, curious to hear what they sounded like before. it's not what i expected. the sound is more subdued, more quiet, without the richness i love so much on their recent material. i don't dislike this album; i just feel a little underwhelmed.

rachel's - music for egon schiele
i thank roxanne for including a track of theirs on a mix cd she gave me; that's how i first heard of them. this album is completely instrumental. it was composed as a soundtrack to a live theater/dance production. all the pieces are played with piano and stringed instruments only. the music is pensive, kind of sad and tragic at times, and goes through different moods. i love it.
