last week was also the release of bright eyes' latest "the people's key". i pre-ordered it from saddle creek, along with some old releases: "every day and every night ep" (from 1999); "a christmas album" (from 2002, an online exclusive).

i received the parcel in the mail yesterday.

they threw in a sampler cd, and included a handwritten thank-you note. how nice!

i am still trying to absorb the epicness of mogwai, so i haven't listened to the new bright eyes yet.

february turned out to be a pretty good month for new releases, compared to the very quiet january.

bright eyes

i had a taste of bright eyes last month, with the ep release. today, the full length "cassadaga" was out.

in terms of the music, i've listened to so much bright eyes, that i have an idea what to expect. on this album, nothing really surprises or impresses me. there are the songs about love, about hate, the songs about people, about places, etc. his singing hasn't changed either; that slightly quivering voice, with the peculiar inflexions. still, i quite enjoy this album; i will remain a bright eyes fan. it is harmless music, suitable for all occasions.

as always, wonderful lyrics. conor oberst never disappoints in that area.

favourite tracks include:

- middleman
- coat check dream song
there will surely be more, as i listen to this several more time.

however, in terms of packaging, it is quite cool. it comes with a 'spectral decoder' to be hovered all over the digipak, to reveal hidden images. i had a bit of fun, before the novelty wore off.

bright eyes

another new release today is the bright eyes ep "four winds". i've all his albums, but this is actually the first bright eyes ep i've gotten. there was a period when i was a conor oberst fangirl, after discovering the near-perfect "lifted", but i am less obsessed now. i haven't listened to much bright eyes since the double release of "wide awake" and "digital ash" (except for that week when i got the b-sides compilation "noise floor"). it's good to hear some new material.

the "four winds" ep continues from "wide awake", in that country-ish, folk-ish kind of sound. as can be expected, smart, clever, quotable lyrics; conor oberst is a storyteller (lyrical genius). i love how his songs rarely have a chorus, and are just lines and lines of poetry. and that unmistakeable voice, with the slight quiver.

this ep is good enough to satisfy my craving/addiction, as i wait for the full-length. i hope he plays a show here eventually...

(oh, this cd also contains mp3's from a bunch of saddle creek bands. sweet!)

bright eyes

i love bright eyes. i've seen them live three times. i have all their studio albums. but i am not fanatical enough to get their non-album material (ep's, singles, splits, etc.). so when i saw an ad in a magazine announcing the release of a collection of non-album material, i was quite excited about it. i found an online leak of the entire, just to get a taste, but i knew i would be getting it anyway. on its release date, i went to hmv megastore looking for the cd "noise floor (rarities: 1998-2005)". to my surprise, i could not find it. i was about to order it online, when yesterday, i passed by hmv in fairview, and actually found the cd there.

no surprises, the songs here sound like typical bright eyes stuff. there's the acoustic, the angry, the emotional, even one slightly electro track. i've found that their material is pretty consistent. so listening to the tracks collected here, spanning over seven years, i cannot tell easily tell which period each song was from. i like how the lyrics booklet provides those little bits of info.
