lights of endangered species
i didn't know that matthew good was releasing any new material, until my cousin told me about it. then, i had forgotten the release date, until the same cousin sent me a link to stream the entire album "lights of endangered species".i didn't need to sample the album; i'd buy any music matt good releases.
i like this album. my favourite track is "non populus".

vancouver
i passed by hmv on tuesday. i saw the new matthew good album "vancouver". i hadn't known about any new material until rox told me about it about a month ago. i had been underwhelmed with his previous release "hospital music", so even though i knew the new songs were streaming for free from his website, i hadn't checked them out.at the store, i sampled a few songs at the listening booth. i was immediately hooked with the opening track:
last parade
i love when he uses the piano in his songs. i skipped to the next track, and i love it just as much:
the boy who could explode
from those two tracks alone, i got the cd.

overall, i really like this album. a lot of piano and strings, which is what i liked so much from his debut solo "avalanche".
another highlight for me is a "rock" track with some punch:
fought to fight it

i went with roxanne.openers were dala, an acoustic duo.

when matthew good come on stage, he was quiet, playing one song after another without a pause, looking upset/angry/tired. i though, "oh no, what if he doesn't talk at all?" then, he started the drinking. and he ended up talking a lot, about the most random things, and what he said were not all apprpriate nor politically correct. but it's okay; we all know he's an opinionated loudmouth anyway.
it was a solo acoustic set. he started by getting the new songs out of the way. these did not sound too different than on disc. then, he went into the older materials: songs from the matthew good band period, including tracks from the rarities and b-sides ep's. very good.
his acoustic rendition of "avalanche" was my favourite of the evening. absolutely beautiful.
setlist:
girl wedged under the front of the firebird
i'm a window
99% of us is failure
born losers
avalanche
advertising on police cars
silent army in the trees
black helicopter
she's in it for the money
sort of a protest song
load me up
strange days
odette
primetime deliverance
fated
apparitions
encore:
north american for life
champions of nothing
suburbia
the fine art of falling apart
he had great lighting, good for pictures:

matthew good
many thanks to rox for letting me know that matthew good is releasing a new album today! i had no idea until a couple of days ago. i like these types of surprises; anxious waiting is avoided.the album has been streaming on the website for a while. even before hearing it, i knew i would be getting it. matthew good has consistently released some good albums; i would buy anything he releases in the future.
i've started to listen to "hospital music" right now. it's more subdued, much less rock than previous albums (especially compared to "beautiful midnight"). the songs are more mellow, which highlights how good his vocals are. a minor annoyance is how he tends to stretch out every second word he sings; it gets a bit tiring after a while.
on certain albums, there is an "eargasm" moment: a part in a song, usually when the melody shifts, that is the most perfect part of an entire album, sending chills down my spine. from now on, i'll start pointing out these special moments, should i find one on my future purchases. on "hospital music", the eargasm moment happens on track 5 "born losers", at around 3:42, when a sequence of notes are hammered out.

matthew good
matthew good's "in a coma" was released last week. at first, i thought it was just a greatest hits compilation, and did not intend to get it since i already own all the albums and ep's (except for the ultra rare "lo-fi b-sides").when i was at the store, i saw that there was also a deluxe edition that comes with an extra cd and a dvd.
the extra cd contains acoustic reworkings of nine songs, all the tracks from the ep "loser anthems" (which i already own), and all the tracks from the ep "lo-fi b-sides" (ultra rare!). so i ended up getting the deluxe edition, just because i'm a sucker for things like that...
