heavy sky ep
ever since i ordered 65daysofstatic's "we were exploding anyway", i've been placed on their mailing list. i usually opt-out of stuff like that, but their newsletter is pretty funny, so i kept reading for entertainment. about a month ago, they announced the release of "heavy sky ep", with unreleased tracks from the exploding sessions. i pre-ordered it, then it came by mail a couple of weeks ago. i kind of forgot to write up a blog post about this.

shipping was £5.85 for a £7 cd. meh.

monotreme
back when i ordered the most recent album by 65daysofstatic, i also went searching for their previous album "the destruction of small ideas", an album i have listened to countless times in digital form. i found it online and ordered it from monotreme records. by the end of may, i came home from vacation, and saw a small padded envelope along with the rest of my mail. i ripped it open to find this:

exactly what i ordered, plus an ep by thee more shallows and some stickers. it's so nice of them to send a few bonuses!
i'd never heard of thee more shallows, but i am really liking the ep "cuts plus two". there's something about it that reminds me of the detachment kit, but with hushed vocals. i'll have to check out their other stuff.

we were exploding anyway
a few weeks ago, i found out from a series of mp3 blogs that 65daysofstatic have new material this year. i didn't even bother downloading the mutliple leaks, since i knew i'd be getting it.two weeks ago, when randomly browsing stuff on the internet, i found out from the band's blog that the first pressing is a deluxe edition. according to the blog: "hard cover, booklet full of extra artwork, won’t get reprinted once it’s gone. there are no extra songs on it. how many albums have their carefully structured flow ruined by badly-placed bonus tracks? loads." haha, i like their humour.
anyway, i'm always a sucker for deluxe editions, so i ordered the album online. the gbp-cad exchange rate is pretty good these days. even including the shipping, it wasn't too expensive.
on friday, the album arrived in the mail:

yeah, the packaging is pretty nice; bound like a hardcover book.
and they are streaming the whole album now:

i really like it. it is one of my favourites of this year, so far.

the cure @ bell centre
i went to the show last night with roxanne and ryan. it was my first time at the bell centre. my first big arena show, and it was great! our section was facing the stage; the seats in the row immediately in front of us were unoccupied, so we had an unobstructed view the whole evening.i had been waiting for this show for a while. it was initially scheduled for september 2007, but was postponed until last night.
i am glad they kept 65daysofstatic as the opening band. electro-post-rock. i really like their albums, and was disappointed that they did not sell cd's last night. they ended their set with "radio protector", my favourite track of theirs. live, they sound exactly the same as on their album, just louder.

the cure gave an *amazing* show. they played for two hours straight, then returned for three encores lasting an additional hour. they played a three-hour set! how awesome is that!?
they had lots of sparkly colourful lights. a large screen split in four sections was in the backgroud, showing different visuals to match the songs. for example, a giant spider during "lullaby".
i must admit that i am not familiar with their entire catalogue. i recognized about half the songs they played, the hits. their set was very varied; they played material spanning almost all their releases, from new songs, to old ones from their debut. it was lots of fun.
big thanks to roxanne, for writing down the mega-setlist.

it was my first time using my new camera at a concert. i took way too many photos, trying to find the optimal settings for that environment. a lot of them turned out not good, but a few were alright.

the funniest picture i took. at the moment when robert smith stuck out his tongue. too bad for the crappy quality.

marché du disque
my second stop was at marché du disque. they place their stock horizontally in rows. my friend called me at that time. i chatted on my phone, while flipping through rows and rows of cd's. i was surprised that i managed to find a few albums, despite the slight distraction. i felt bad about staying on the phone while paying for my purchase; how rude of me.65daysofstatic - one time for all time
coincidence: this happens to be the album with my favourite song "radio protector". i cannot wait to see them open for the cure, in september.
new order - get ready
new order - waiting for the sirens' call
i've been listening to new order's discography. good stuff. these are their two most recent studio albums.
nine inch nails - further down the spiral
remix album, companion to "the downward spiral" that i love so much. and i usually like hearing remixes too.
dfa compilation #2
i've told myself not to buy compilations anymore. but this one comes with three discs, and could serve as a dance mix, i suppose.
