yes, i know, nine inch nails' "the slip" was already digitally released a couple of months ago, for free. i had downloaded it then. but that doesn't stop me from buying the physical release today. just to push cd sales, it includes a dvd and some stickers (whatever), and is limited to 250,000 copies.

when i first listened to this album, i quite liked it, much more than the previous "ghosts i-iv". whereas "ghosts" sounds more experimental, like an exercise in the studio, "the slip" feels more like a complete album. the first part (tracks 1-6) sounds like typical nin songs, with catchy beats and/or angry vocals. the last few tracks (7-10) are my favourite: mostly instrumental, atmospheric, all the good stuff i love from "the fragile".

i looked around at the copies in the store, trying to find some good numbers. i settled on number 92,999:

nin

today was the retail release of nine inch nails' "ghosts i-iv", their first since their departure from universal. everyone has probably heard about it by now, as it was digitally released about a month ago, with its many pricing schemes. as a casual fan, all i want is the cd edition.

an entirely instrumental album, reminding me of the softer side of nin, similar to the stuff i loved so much on "the fragile". at times, it feels a bit like elevator music, in that it is not too remarkable.

still, overall, i think it's a nice album.

another week, another cd purchase.

this time, i got nine inch nails' "year zero remixed" (or "y34rz3r0r3m1x3d"). although "year zero" was not a particularly amazing album, i still love listening to remixes.

on this album, the kronos quartet track "another version of the truth" is my favourite. it's kind of obvious; i like music with stringed instruments.

included with the album is a dvd-rom, with multitracks of the songs, and an application for manipulating them. i'll have to try it later to see what the deal is.

also, remix.nin.com was to be some forum for fans to share their remixes, which would have been an interesting site. however, they seem to be going through some legal toubles right now. we'll see how that plays out.

commercial stuff

thanks to good friend and music buddy roxanne, who got me a hmv gift card for my birthday. it is exactly the kind of gift that i like!

of course, i cannot keep it in my wallet for long, so i went to the store to check out the new releases today. while browsing the shelves, i was distracted by all the spice girls songs they were blasting in the store; ugh, (bad) memories from high school. i was a bit confused by some of the new releases: spice girls? backstreet boys? wtf?! are we back in 1998?

the other new releases this week were not of interest to me. so i got some older albums. radio-friendly rock music. i just want some easy stuff to listen to. i am getting 'old'.

brand new - deja entendu
yes, i know, there are countless, undistinguishable, generic emo-pop-punk bands out there. but for some reason, this album stands out to me. i admit, it is because of that "sic transit gloria" song. is this a guilty pleasure? not really. there are a few emo-pop-punk bands among the masses that i actually enjoy quite a lot. brand new is one of them.

neverending white lights - act ii: the blood and the life eternal
i got this on a whim. i saw it at the store, remembered his song "the grace" - a nice song, featuring vocals by dallas green - from a few years ago, and thought "ah? new material? let's see who's contributing this time..." i like that he finds different vocalists for each of his songs. seeing a current cast that includes jimmy gnecco, auf der maur, rob dickinson, and hawksley workman (!), i knew i must get this cd.

"the fragile" is probably my favourite nin album. i have no idea why it took me so long to get this remix album. anyway, i got it today; i will be listening to this all week.

marché du disque

my second stop was at marché du disque. they place their stock horizontally in rows. my friend called me at that time. i chatted on my phone, while flipping through rows and rows of cd's. i was surprised that i managed to find a few albums, despite the slight distraction. i felt bad about staying on the phone while paying for my purchase; how rude of me.

65daysofstatic - one time for all time
coincidence: this happens to be the album with my favourite song "radio protector". i cannot wait to see them open for the cure, in september.

i've been listening to new order's discography. good stuff. these are their two most recent studio albums.

remix album, companion to "the downward spiral" that i love so much. and i usually like hearing remixes too.

i've told myself not to buy compilations anymore. but this one comes with three discs, and could serve as a dance mix, i suppose.

nine inch nails

although i am not as big of a nine inch nails fan as i was back in high school/cegep, i still follow the album releases, usually every four/five years. that is why i was surprised to find out that trent reznor was releasing material this year, so fast after "with teeth". a new album in just two years? will it suck?

i got the new "year zero" today. it's not his best work; it doesn't compare to my favourite "the fragile" (go ahead and hate me, hardcore nin fans). but "year zero" is still pretty good. i'll probably like it more after several listens, as i alwasy do, with nin albums.

there is nothing exceptionally new here. it sounds angry, with the bad teen-angst poetry (weak lyrics). sound effects and glitches here and there. typical nin.

however, i am quite impressed with the whole promotion of this album. with the clue in the tour t-shirts, the websites, the idea of some near-future dystopia, the presence, etc. very well done.

when i got home, i put the cd in my laptop drive and played for a while. when i took it out to store it away, i momentarily freaked out; i thought i had gone crazy, a slight glitch in my memory.
