virgin megastore champs-élysées
from may 3rd to the 27th, i went on a trip to europe with rox, visiting several cities in three countries: spain (madrid, barcelona), france (aix-en-provence, marseille, cannes, grasse, montpellier, cassis, paris), italy (florence, rome).our last stop was in paris. we spent one afternoon walking on les champs-élysées. we spent some time in the virgin megastore. the first item i picked up was vitalic's most recent "flashmob". then, browsing the french rock section, i found some old indochine albums, "l'aventurier" and "3". since these were all french releases, they were cheaper there than at home.

i also saw a new album by saez, "j'accuse". i had loved his debut "jours étranges" back when it was released a decade ago, but hadn't heard anything else since. so i was hesitant, and didn't get the new one. it's unfortunate, since returning home and sampling a few songs, i realized i should have bought it there. the stores here do not stock it...

indochine, yann perreau
when i went by hmv on monday, i saw a new album by indochine. it must be a very new release, since it wasn't available on their listening stations; i decided to wait before buying this. that night, i checked out their first single "little dolls" on their myspace. no surprise.that night, watching videos of état critique, i found out about a new album by yann perreau. again, i checked out a couple of songs on his myspace. nice.
yesterday, i got the two cds.

indochine "la république des meteors" is very similar to the stuff they've been releasing for the past years (such as "paradize" and "alice & june"). it's nothing new from them, but they're good at what they do: catchy songs with a slight dance beat, mixed with a hint of gothiness.
i was pleasantly surprised by yann perreau "un serpent sous les fleurs". i had liked a few tracks from his debut "western romance", while the rest of that album sounded like filler to me. his name dropped off my radar after that. now, i find myself liking all of his new album. it's a good mix of pop and rock, lots of subtle piano sounds, adding a bit of drama to some songs.
i have trouble selecting a single favourite track, so here are three:

fox troc
the last store i visited was le fox troc. i loved that their discs were placed in alphabetical order. but the selection was mostly popuar mainstream stuff. still, i found a few francophone cd's of interest.indochine - dancetaria
i've been liking them since seeing them last year. great show. i'd like to get all their albums, but i haven't had much luck finding them at the stores at a reasonable price.
jérôme minière - petit cosmonaute
i think he is french? i am not sure. i just remember hearing about this guy.
pierre lapointe - la forêt des mal-aimés
i kept reading good reviews about this guy. it is about time i check out some of his stuff. i remember seeing his video for "deux par deux rassemblés" and it made me laugh so much. c'est trop quétaine!

devotchka, indochine, regina spektor
the discs i ordered a few weeks ago finally arrived by mail today.devotchka - how it ends
when i first heard about them, i confused them with the punk band devotchkas, and so never really checked out their stuff. finally, my friend roxanne sent me a devotchka song "how it ends". it was absolutely beautiful, with the stringed instruments near the end. this album is a mix of genres, mostly gypsy folk, with some polka, and cabaret rock.
indochine - paradize
when their album "danceteria" was released, i heard a bit about indochine. but it was seeing their video "mao boy" from the album "paradize" that i realized i really liked their music. and after seeing them live, i loved their show so much, i had to get this album. this is one of the few french bands i really love. i am hoping to find their older albums, but it appears most of them are imports...
regina spektor - soviet kitch
i first heard about her when a musiqueplus vj was presenting her video for "us", and described her as "comme une tori amos fuckée." it's actually quite accurate. a strong singing voice with piano, and the occasional band to accompany some songs.

indochine @ metropolis

i had such a blast!

indochine
i remember first hearing about indochine when "paradize" was released, and i saw their video for "marilyn" on tv. it immediately caught my attention, as the video is very pleasing, both to the eyes and the ears.after finding out that indochine are playing montreal in june, as part of the francofolies festival, i bought their most recent double-disc release "alice & june". i have been listening to it non-stop since then. it's amazing, and i love it.
today, i got my ticket for their show. i cannot wait to see them live!
now, i want to get their older material (~10 studio albums), without spending too much. i should go look around the second-hand music stores.
