l'échange / mont-royal

this week is my midterm break. so i shopped for some second-hand cd's today. it is a always a surprise to see what i will find. my first stop was at l'échange on mont-royal.

amon tobin - supermodified
i first found out about amon tobin after seeing the somewhat creepy video of "four ton mantis". i got this album for that song alone.

blutengel - child of glass
german electro with a gothic feel.

depeche mode - remixes 81-04 (limited 3-disc edition)
i have been drooling over this for a long while, but the $40 price tag at hmv kept me from buying it. i am so happy i waited, because i found it today at $18. so happy!

dan in real life - soundtrack
(new?) music from sondre lerche. i love his cover of "let my love open the door".

good bye, lenin! - soundtrack
i saw this movie years ago, and loved it. yann tiersen did the soundtrack, so it should be quite good.

plaza st-hubert

there was a sidewalk sale at plaza st-hubert this weekend. today, i went to check it out, recalling that there is a store selling music and films. i browsed through their second hand cd section, and picked up a few items.

amon tobin - permutation
i've been wanting to get some amon tobin cd's ever since i saw the video for "4-ton mantis". although this album does not contain that song, i got it anyway.

cocteau twins - lullabies to violaine
a compilation of their singles and ep's. although i am not much of a cocteau twins fan, i feel i should have some of their music in my collection.

lovely feathers - my best friend daniel
fun music to listen to. they were great, when i saw them live last year, easily upstaging the feature band they were opening for.

magneta lane - the constant lover
i remember seeing a video of this band. although i cannot remember the song, i think i liked it enough. besides, this cd was in the bargain section, so there is no harm in trying it.

patrick wolf - lycanthropy
my best find of the day. i was so happy to see this in the bargain section; i could hardly believe my luck! this is patrick wolf's debut album and it is amazing. i had ordered it at full price from amazon, only to have my order mixed up, and never getting the merchandise... and now i end up finding it at a super reduced price. yay! this is the main reason i love to shop at second hand stores; i never know what treasures i'll find, and sometimes at bargain prices too!

ryan adams - demolition
this gets me one step closer to collecting all of ryan adams' albums...

overall, i am very pleased at what i found today. especially that patrick wolf album...!

amon tobin

just a week ago, i was listening to amon tobin's "bricolage", not knowing that he was releasing new material. i found out when i was in the store last week, saw a cd with cool album art, approached to see what it was, and oh, it was tobin's new album, "foley room". i hesitated to get it, not knowing if it was new material, or live recordings, or a compilation of whatever.

the past week, i checked it out, and heard some samples. the opening track "bloodstone" alone is worth the album. i did not bother hearing the rest before getting the cd today.

in "bloodstone", i love the slight dissonance in the screeching of the stringed instruments. strangely, that track makes me want to dance; i find that it sounds like an evil waltz. when my brother heard the song, he asked: "who died?"

from the album cover, i found out that this track features the kronos quartet (the same people who played on the "requiem for a dream" soundtrack, cool!).

to me, this album is a break from the usual indie rock stuff i listen to. i find there to be something unsettling about the sounds. (it may be because my first exposure to amon tobin's music is through this video that still scares me to this day.)

the album comes with a dvd, on how the album was created. this album is different in that rather than sample from old records, tobin went out to record various sounds. some are kinf of unusual: automated machinery in a factory, roaring tigers and other animals at parc safari, even ants and other insects. on the album, he combined this "found foutage" with recordings of musicians playing and experimenting with their instruments. quite interesting.
