the birthday massacre @ petit café campus
tonight was the birthday massacre show. i went with rox and fil. it was my first time seeing this band live, after rox introduced me to their music a few years ago. with no opening act except for dj mr. black spinning a mostly industrial/electro set, the birthday massacre played right away. i must admit that i am not too familiar with their material. but i still had a good time, dancing throughout the whole set.
we got good spots, right in front of the stage. the singer sang into our faces at times, haha. she's cute, like a dark pixie, prancing around on stage. the whole band had lots of energy, playing one song after another, with barely any pauses in-between. that was good, since the crowd was really into the music, dancing non-stop.
rox took some photos:
since i don't really know their songs, it was nice to see the setlist a few feet away from me. here is what i remember:
intro
video kid
lovers end
goodnight
falling down
violet
red stars
looking glass
remember me
walking with strangers
weekend
horror show
kill the light
encore:
blue
happy birthday
it would seem that most are from the new album. i will get it, when it comes out in two weeks.
after the show, the band stuck around and chatted with people. a couple of the bandmembers remember rox and fil, from having met them at their previous shows in montreal. they were nice and friendly. but i felt kind of awkward, asking for autographs, and i didn't know what to say to them, other than "awesome show."
~~~
cd purchase: i got their debut "nothing & nowhere". i was hoping that maybe they would sell the new album at the merch table, but they didn't.
hearing damage: surprisingly, not much, even though we were standing just in front of the stage. i think the dj set seemed louder...
fox troc
the last store i visited was le fox troc. i loved that their discs were placed in alphabetical order. but the selection was mostly popuar mainstream stuff. still, i found a few francophone cd's of interest.indochine - dancetaria
i've been liking them since seeing them last year. great show. i'd like to get all their albums, but i haven't had much luck finding them at the stores at a reasonable price.
jérôme minière - petit cosmonaute
i think he is french? i am not sure. i just remember hearing about this guy.
pierre lapointe - la forêt des mal-aimés
i kept reading good reviews about this guy. it is about time i check out some of his stuff. i remember seeing his video for "deux par deux rassemblés" and it made me laugh so much. c'est trop quétaine!
marché du disque
my second stop was at marché du disque. they place their stock horizontally in rows. my friend called me at that time. i chatted on my phone, while flipping through rows and rows of cd's. i was surprised that i managed to find a few albums, despite the slight distraction. i felt bad about staying on the phone while paying for my purchase; how rude of me.
65daysofstatic - one time for all time
coincidence: this happens to be the album with my favourite song "radio protector". i cannot wait to see them open for the cure, in september.
new order - get ready
new order - waiting for the sirens' call
i've been listening to new order's discography. good stuff. these are their two most recent studio albums.
nine inch nails - further down the spiral
remix album, companion to "the downward spiral" that i love so much. and i usually like hearing remixes too.
dfa compilation #2
i've told myself not to buy compilations anymore. but this one comes with three discs, and could serve as a dance mix, i suppose.
l'échange
summer is almost ending. and so i went to a few second-hand cd shops, to see what stock they have. i ended up finding a few things i am quite happy about.
my first stop was at l'échange. they place their stock vertically, which was a pain in the neck whenever i tried to browse the upper shelves.
as the poets affirm - awake
when i picked this from the store, i thought this was a post-rock-ish band from canada. and any kind of post-rock is good with me. but now that i am listening to it, it is not quite post-rock, mainly due to the inclusion of vocals on their songs...
the birthday massacre - violet
i can't wait to see them live on monday! coincidence: on my way into a store after cd shopping, my bag set off their anti-theft device. i took out all my cd's, and as the cashier was de-magnetizing them, she pointed at "violet" and said: "this is really good!" when i told her about their show on monday, she said she couldn't attend because it is a 18+ show. that's too bad.
the cure - the cure
i got this because it is the version including the dvd. as for all their previous albums, i am waiting for the deluxe re-issues. i am excited to be seeing them in september!
desaparecidos - read music/speak spanish
conor oberst's political rock band/side project.
the most serene republic - underwater cinematographer
"content was always my favourite colour" is a happy song. i like that song name.
mutemath - mutemath
i was quite impressed after seeing their video for "reset", shot live at one of their shows. such energy!
